This past weekend we celebrated my son’s high school graduation with a movie themed graduation party. Since he will be majoring in film studies in college, we decided to have a little fun and create an event that felt like a movie premier. Complete with a step and repeat, movie concession stand, outdoor movie screen and a popcorn inspired centerpiece! We wanted to share with you some of the details from the party to help inspire your own movie themed party.
When developing a theme for a party, I like to start with my centerpieces and work off from that for the rest of the party. To make the popcorn inspired floral centerpieces, I started with a plastic popcorn box from Target, found in the seasonal $1 section. I added a bag of glass beads from the Dollar Tree Store to keep them from tipping over and to help hold the hydrangeas in place. In each container, I placed two hydrangea heads and then sprinkled yellow mini carnations in between and through the hydrangea heads. This made the “popcorn” look buttered and more realistic.
To complete the centerpieces I stacked three DVD cases, placed my floral popcorn on top, leaned a movie clapboard against the popcorn box and placed a golden globe inspired mini statue on either side. The clapboard and mini statues were both from the Oriental Trading Company.
Next, I knew I wanted to create a step and repeat, an area my son and his friends could take pictures and feel like the VIP guests they were. Again, I turned to the Oriental Trading Company for the sign that we used for our backdrop. It fit the theme perfectly and I was able to customize it with my son’s name and graduation year.
I rented the red rope and stanchions from a local rental company and the red carpet was yet another Oriental Trading Company find.
On either side of the sign and under the tent that we rented we added movie inspired decoration. Items like gold stars and movie reel paper fans found at our local Party City store and actual movie reels picked up at a local flee market. These items helped to reinforce the theme and add a decorative touch.
To add a personal touch to the party, Cassie made three picture boards that were hung by the food tables under the tent.
She kept with the movie graduation theme by using more gold stars, movie inspired fonts and a film strip look around the pictures.
Later this week, we’ll share with you the rest of our movie themed graduation party decorations, including a concession stand, outdoor movie screen and popcorn inspired cupcakes! Be sure to come back for more movie themed graduation party inspiration!
