Classic Cocktails: Vodka Martini

Classic Cocktail: Martini

The vodka martini first appeared in the 1950s and was known as the Kangaroo (really! read about it here on Serious Eats) Vodka just hit the market and bartenders weren’t sure what what to do with it. How you could NOT know what to do with vodka, it’s more a question of what can’t you do? Apparently they weren’t sure so they adapted gin-based drinks. The gin martini became the vodka martini and it just took over.

To make a vodka martini, use a 2:1 vodka-vermouth ratio and garnish with your choice lemon twist or olives as shown above.

  • 1 1/2 ounces premium vodka
  • 3/4 ounce dry vermouth
  • 3 olives for garnish directions

  • Pour ingredients into a cocktail shaker filled with ice.
  • Shake well.
  • Strain into a chilled cocktail glass.
  • Garnish with olives.

I plan on doing a few cocktail illustrations. Do you have a favorite you’d like to see?

P.S. This is available in my Etsy shop as an 8×10 or 11×14 print to frame and hang on your wall.

Salute, Denise
