Since we are starting a twelve month Crochet Along Floral Inspired Granny Square Afghan project, I thought some of you might appreciate some resources to either learn to crochet or refresh your basic crochet skills. So grab a cup of coffee and spend a little time checking out these awesome crochet for beginners resources.

lionbrand.com – Lion Brand Yarns has an extensive collection of videos and images dedicated to teaching the fundamentals of crochet. From creating a slip stitch and how to hold the hook, to understanding gauge and joining techniques. It’s all covered here. You can even download the instructions for future reference. They also have a page with all the abbreviations you’ll ever need to know. Not only are they defined for you, if you click on anyone of them, you’ll get a detailed explanation of how to execute the stitch or action of the abbreviation.

Michaels Classes – If you prefer to learn in person with a classroom type setting, Micheals offers all levels of classes for crochet. Find a location close to you and register online, it’s that easy.

A to Z of Crochet by Martingale – If you’re like me and still enjoy a good old fashion book, “A to Z of Crochet: The Ultimate Guide for Beginner to Advanced Crocheter” is an excellent resource. This book covers everything from understanding the different types of yarn and how to read patterns to advanced stitches like bobbles, clusters and picots.

YouTube.com – I would be crazy not to mention You Tube here as a resource for all kinds of beginner crochet videos. However, with that said, be careful. Not all You Tube videos are created equally. There are some extremely knowledgeable people with decent video making skills on You Tube sharing all sorts of great information, and then there is everyone else. I like The Crochet Guru. Her channel is well organized and easy to navigate. Her videos are also well thought out and presented in a professional manner. She covers everything you will need to know to get started crocheting and if you are left handed you’re going to love her. She shows every skill with a right and left handed version.

Happy Crocheting!

Salute, Sharleen
