Welcome August! Here’s your free downloadable August 2015 calendar, download here.
National Friendship Day and Sisters Day are both the first Sunday in August… it’s nice when those two things go together! It’s also International Forgiveness Day, so if you and your sis aren’t besties, maybe that’s a good day to forgive her. August 8th is Sneak Some Zucchini onto Your Neighbor’s Porch Day. Feel free, I just got a spiralizer. The 10th is National S’mores Day, prepare with this s’mores kit here. The 23rd is Ride the Wind Day, a good excuse to go for a motorcycle ride. Mark your calendars!
August was called ‘Sextilis’ in the original Roman calendar because it was the sixth month of the year. January and February were added later to the calendar and bumped August to the eighth month of the year. In 45 BC, Julius Caesar came along and created the Julian calendar. Caesar decided August needed a couple more days so he made it 31 instead of 29 days. Eventually someone realized ‘Sextilis’ didn’t really make sense anymore and the month got a name change to ‘Augustus’ in honor of Caesar Augustus, the first emperor of Rome. Can you imagine the jokes if August was still called ‘Sextilis?!’
